Food for the planet: The Clean Plate Club

I have recently volunteered with some great causes and campaigns through MN350. One of my favorite programs at MN350 is The Clean Plate Club. This is a group of restaurants that are coming together to reduce food waste practices. Members of the CPC work to keep food out of landfills by donating that food to local food shelves and composting food scraps to create rich soil. Almost 40% of food in the United States is wasted, and about 15% of this comes from food service. Food waste accounts for about 8% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Please support these restaurants and work together to create improvements for our food system. You can see all the members in Minnesota below.

This reduction in food waste reduces emissions, conserves resources, and also provides an opportunity to donate food to those who need it.

Also – listen to the Nourish podcast ‘Ripple Effect’ Episode to learn more. In this episode Sarah Riedl, Cassie Hagen, and Lisa Chou talk about how partnerships between small businesses, non-profits, and government entities have been successful at reducing food waste in Minnesota. Leaders like Dan Swenson-Klatt from Butter Bakery and Leslie Duling-McCollam from Ramsey/Washington Recycling & Energy discuss inspiring examples of the kinds of partnership we need more of, how they’ve been part of MN350’s Clean Plate Club campaign, and the challenges we still face towards achieving a waste-free future, plus lots of ways listeners like you can take action.
